L\u2019urbanisme dels anys cinquanta va proposar autopistes davant la forta demanda de l\u2019autom\u00f2bil, per\u00f2 m\u00e9s tard, el terratr\u00e8mol Loma Prieta del 1989 va derruir dos trams del gran viaducte que travessava la ciutat. Aquest fet va demostrar a ciutadans i pol\u00edtics que la xarxa vi\u00e0ria existent de San Francisco estava suficientment estructurada per sustentar gran part del tr\u00e0fic quotidi\u00e0 de la ciutat. Si abans del desastre natural ja hi havia molta opini\u00f3 p\u00fablica a favor de la demolici\u00f3 de la I-280, aquest fet va acabar de conv\u00e8ncer la poblaci\u00f3 sobre la necessitat de la demolici\u00f3 del gran viaducte de dos pisos que fragmentava la ciutat i dividia els barris. <\/p>\n<p>El 2002 l\u2019autopista Embarcadero va ser substitu\u00efda per una pla\u00e7a en forma de bulevard urb\u00e0 amb una l\u00ednia de tramvia incorporada que connecta el moll amb el centre i el barri de Castro. Un gran parc de m\u00e9s de 40 ha s\u2019endinsa des de la zona dels molls cap al centre de la ciutat, i s\u2019ha regenerat el barri amb nous habitatges i noves activitats i usos mixtos. Avui en dia, encara resten trams pendents d\u2019enderrocar, que depenen de les agendes pol\u00edtiques.
